Who domesticated the cat?As man became aware of the value that different animals could have for him, he began to domesticate them. Dogs made excellent hunting partners. Cows provided meat, milk, and labor. Horses were a fine form of transportation. It was the Cat, however, that decided to live with man, not the other way around. What attracted cats to man was the hordes of rats and mice that congregated around the stores of food that man had learned to build up in ancient Egypt. The cats that first chose to live near or with man, and thus became the ancestors of all domestic breeds, were of the African Wild Cat species (Felis lybica) that still exists today. (Cat Facts, Marcus Schneck & Jill Caravan) How many cat breeds are there?About 100 pedigree breeds are now recognized. All breeds generally fall into one of five categories: Persians, Longhairs, British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs, and oriental Shorthairs. However, that is far from an all-inclusive total. Some breeds, such as Snowshoe, are so new that breed standards have not been fully developed to allow for their official recognition. I'm proud to say that all my four cats are American Shorthairs. Should cats eat vegetables?Providing some fresh additions to food can be very beneficial and tasty for your cat. It's not uncommon for cats to selectively eat food containing nutrients they may be deficient in. This instinctive act sometimes alerts their people to the particular deficiency. An outdoor cat relies on natural greens to aid his digestion. Not all cats are plant eaters. But if your cats, you can plant a pot of grass for leisurely nibbles, so your cat will have his own grass and not have to seek out your plants. Serving vegetables to your can can provide extra means of fiber, or extra boosts of easily destroyed vitamins. Cucumbers. You're laughing, right? I've seen may cats go crazy for a slice of cucumber. Peel the cucumber if it has been waxed. Garlic. "Garlic?" Garlic is very good for your cat. Yes, unfortunately you may have to endure his garlic breath. Garlic contains vitamins B and C. It can purify the blood and rid the body of excess glucose. Here are some more suggestions: Broccoli, Green Beans, Lima beans, Peas, Tomato Juice, Carrots, Celery.
